The Push Toward 5G Deployment

At a time when IoT (internet of things) and VR (virtual reality) applications are growing rapidly, connected devices and systems are skyrocketing, and video is expected to account for 75% of all data traffic by 2023, efforts to adopt 5G are quickly ramping up. Ultra-reliable, ultra-fast, ultra-high capacity transmitting at super low latency, 5G is expected to support ultra-large data requirements. Also known as next generation wireless connectivity, the push toward 5G deployment efforts continue to accelerate as businesses struggle with supporting increasing data and speed demands.

5G Deployment and Fixed Wireless Access

FWA is expected to dramatically impact the US economy, benefiting the way we live and work. Viewed as the first application for 5G in the millimeter wave spectrum, fixed wireless access (FWA) is set to roll-out quickly pending business’ current equipment capabilities being able to support the additional high-power and bandwidth.

Using radio signals, rather than copper or fiber cables, these broadband services will not only provide fast internet speeds but also accessibility to broadband mobile, IoT devices, along with the low latency for VR and 3D applications. FWA works by utilizing wireless technologies to connect a base station to a fixed wireless terminal which provides backhauling services. And, since 5G deployment can support multiple-access networks, FWA becomes an attractive alternative to fixed broadband access.

In the case where small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) infrastructure is nonexistent or insufficient, 5G FWA provides a sound solution and even has the potential to provide 10 to 100 times more capacity than 4G. This not only enables cost-saving solutions on a massive scale, but also offers unprecedented technology options when compared to other wireline solutions.

5G fixed wireless access may also be used to increase existing broadband access throughout dense urban deployments without needing to make comprehensive upgrades to physical infrastructures. Thanks to higher peak rates in combination with low-latency and high-efficiency data compression techniques, 5G access is the key to seamlessly enable future applications as well.

When Will 5G Deployment for Fixed Wireless Be Available?

Although 5G remains in its early stages SME users will soon be able to access the broadband services in the United States. According to a press release, “Verizon’s first commercial launch is planned to be in Sacramento, Calif., in the second half of 2018.” Additional information on the launch in four other markets will be provided at a later time.

They also estimate that the market opportunity for initial 5G residential broadband services to be approximately 30 million households nationwide. In 2017, the telecom company has already run a 5G trial application throughout eleven cities including Dallas, Denver, Atlanta and Seattle. According to the release, “The commercial launch is based on customer experience and on Verizon’s confidence in new technology powered by millimeter-wave spectrum.”

Preparing for 5G Deployment

As a business owner, you’ll likely have questions and concerns about 5G deployment and the exciting applications of next generation applications. Not sure how to move forward with 5G deployment? As we all draw closer to 5G, businesses should be proactive in their thinking, and start looking for support to ensure a successful migration.

Although it’s not clear to tell exactly what level of capabilities 5G wireless networks will have instore for businesses and customers, but it looks to be the biggest one yet. The fifth generation of mobile technology opens the door to innovative mobile applications through high-speed mobile broadband service and promises to deliver enhanced service in a seamless consistent manner for industries. This is particularly important for industries such as transportation, education, commerce, health care and public safety which is why business should ready themselves from both a technical and process perspective.
