Why Big Box Retailers Should Start Considering Solar Today

Seventeen billion dollars.

That’s roughly the amount of money big box retailers in the United States spend on electricity bills each year — but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Solar energy has become the fastest-growing form of electricity generation in the U.S., and one of the biggest reasons for that growth has to do with its low, and quickly dropping, price.

According to research by the nonprofit organization Environment America, big box retailers in the U.S. have the potential to host as much as 84TWh worth of solar capacity, meeting at least half of their energy needs in-house and generating significant financial savings in the process.

According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the average Walmart store has approximately 180,000 square feet of roof space, and that space could support solar modules that would generate more than a megawatt of power. Additional calculations have shown that if every big box store in California were to max out its rooftops with solar arrays, they could produce nearly as much electricity as the total output of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear reactor.

All told, putting solar modules in big box stores in the U.S. could have the potential to increase the country’s total solar capacity by 67%.

With sustainability and environmental responsibility having moved to the forefront of corporate agendas in 2024, big box retailers are finding themselves at a crossroads. The traditional model of large-scale retail operations comes with a significant environmental footprint, but solar is a solution that addresses these concerns and also offers long-term financial benefits.

It’s clear that now is the time for big box retailers to seriously consider converting to solar power, not just for the greater good, but also for their financial prosperity. Here’s what you should know.

Solar Energy: The Environmental Imperative

As an expert in solar engineering, KMB Design Group understands the role that clean energy sources play in mitigating climate change. Big box retailers have a unique opportunity to lead by example and champion sustainability.

Converting to solar power can drastically reduce the environmental impact of a retailer’s operations, helping to create a more sustainable future.

Cost Savings and Financial Benefits for Retailers

One of the primary concerns for retail executives is the financial feasibility of transitioning to solar power. Contrary to common misconceptions, investing in solar energy is not just an environmentally friendly choice, but also a financially savvy one.

The initial capital outlay for solar installations may seem significant, but the long-term benefits far outweigh the costs.

Reduced Energy Bills

By adopting solar, big box retailers can cut down on their reliance on conventional energy sources. Solar panels generate electricity throughout the day, reducing the need for grid power during peak hours. This translates into substantial savings on energy bills, ultimately improving a company’s bottom line.

Government Incentives and Tax Credits

Federal and state governments are actively promoting the adoption of renewable energy. Big box retailers can take advantage of various incentives and tax credits offered for solar installations, making the transition more financially attractive. These incentives not only offset initial costs but also contribute to faster return on investment.

Resilience and Energy Independence

Big box retailers often rely heavily on a consistent power supply for various systems, from lighting to refrigeration. Solar installations, coupled with energy storage solutions, ensure a reliable power source, reducing vulnerability to grid failures and blackouts.

Enhancing Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate social responsibility is more than just a buzzword; it’s a critical aspect of modern business. Consumers are increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of their purchasing decisions. By converting to solar power, big box retailers can align their operations with sustainable practices, bolstering their social responsibility initiatives and building positive brand perception among environmentally conscious consumers.

Meeting Regulatory Requirements

As the federal government tightens regulations on carbon emissions and energy consumption, big box retailers face the challenge of compliance. Converting to solar power not only helps meet these regulatory requirements but also positions companies to be seen as proactive contributors to global sustainability goals. This proactive approach can lead to favorable relationships with regulators and a positive public image.
