Different from distributed generation, utility-scale projects are typically larger and the electricity generated is often sold to wholesale utility buyers, rather than end-use consumers. These systems are generally connected directly to the utility grid rather than behind a customer meter. Utility-scale solar can also be a Community Solar system, where a solar facility is shared by multiple community subscribers.
Many utility-scale solar power plants can also be paired with energy storage to manage energy ramps, provide backup power, and more.
According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), over 100,000 MW of utility-scale solar projects are currently in operation, or under development. And despite the COVID-19 pandemic, utility-scale solar remained resilient, representing 71% of all new solar capacity brought online in Q2 2020.
