Top 16 U.S. Cities For Solar Power

The solar power industry is in the middle of a spectacular growth spurt in the United States, especially in densely populated areas. Contrary to what you may suspect, some of the most rapid rates of solar installation have been seen in cities not especially known for their sunshine. A few of the top cities include: Indianapolis, Indiana; San Jose, California; Wilmington, Delaware; and Newark, New Jersey. Read More!

The World’s First Solar Road Is Producing More Energy Than Expected

In its first six months of existence, the world’s first solar road (built for bike traffic) is performing even better than developers thought. The 230-foot stretch of road, which opened in the Netherlands in November of last year, has produced more than 3,000 kilowatt-hours of energy — enough to power a single small household for one year. The Age of Wind and Solar Is Closer Than You Think

This shift, says energy analyst Nick Butler of the Financial Times, provides “advance notice of a revolutionary development.” The collapse of solar module prices “has enabled solar to move from being a niche supplier to being a major regional competitor to [fossil fuels] and a potential disrupter of the whole power industry.” Read more.

Solar Solution: MIT Creates Way To Make Salt Water Drinkable

The team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has invented a system that works by using solar panels to charge a large bank of batteries. These power an electrodialysis machine and remove salt from the water, making it drinkable. Find out how!

Bill Nye Starts Kickstarter Campaign For Solar Sailing Spacecraft

The campaign is seeking at least $200,000 and a maximum of $1 million to fund LightSail — a mission to send a small, solar-sailing spacecraft into Earth’s orbit and thus demonstrate solar sails as a viable method of propulsion for space travel. If all goes well, the spacecraft will be brought to the Earth’s orbit aboard an Atlas V rocket, where its systems will be tested during a month-long mission. Read on about the solar sail.

Food Trucks In NYC To Ditch Diesel, Go Solar In Attempt To Clean Up City’s Air Pollution

The pollution problem is playing out in cities across the United States, as four-wheeled kitchens increasingly appear on sidewalks and streets. Food trucks alone have seen revenues rise 9.3 percent on an average annual basis since 2010. In New York, the epicenter of the food truck boom, city officials are starting to tackle the issue. A pilot program unveiled last month will give vendors a chance to lease up to 500 energy-efficient, solar-powered carts for five years at no or little cost. If successful, the initiative could be replicated in other cities where conventional food carts contaminate the air. Chew on this news.
