5G and Network Densification

Network DensificationThanks to the explosive growth of mobile communication and data consumption, wireless subscribers are using up more network resources than ever before. And they’re not slowing down. In fact, predictions show that 75% of Internet use will be mobile in 2017. So, in response to these increasing demands, operators are being tasked with adding more capacity through means such as network densification.

What Is Network Densification?

According to Commscope there are three main ways to add capacity to a network. Buy more spectrum, make that spectrum more efficient, or densify the network. They define network densification as “adding more cell sites to increase the amount of available capacity”. So the key is to increase available resources without needing to obtain more rack space.

RCR Wireless states, “By increasing the number of cells, the traffic per square-meter can be increased without requiring a corresponding increase in the traffic that needs to be supported per network node, and by increasing the number of network nodes, the base-station-to-terminal distances will be shorter with a corresponding improvement in achievable data rates.”

Locations with high concentration of mobile users are ideal for network densification. Public venues, large commercial office buildings and urban areas, for example, are often considered capacity-strained areas; adding strategically-placed cell sites will boost network capacity in these locations where it’s needed most.

5G Impacts Network Densification

In the past four years mobile as seen growth (thanks to the explosion of mobile video and the Internet of Things). Mobile has gone from 40% to 70% of total internet usage. It has completely changed the way we live, work and shop. This constant increase in mobile traffic and demands for higher data rates are directly impacting future network deployment.

Add in the migration of 5G technology which is expected to deliver speeds 10-20 times faster than 4G, deliver ultra-low latency, high throughput and large numbers of connections… and it’s clear to see that network densification is becoming a necessity to maintain quality as well as speed.
